Pigeon Peas are referred to as a pea, but they are really a bean, also known as Tropical Green Pea, Congo Pea, Red Gram- whose cultivation can be traced back more than 3,500 years and today it spread from eastern India to Africa and the Middle East. In Barbados, it was used to feed pigeons. Dried Pigeon Peas have a mealy texture when cooked, and a sweet but strong, pungent flavor.
